The Hitachi R-WB640VRU0-1 (GBK) is a freestanding American-style fridge freezer with four doors and a black glass front. At the top are two French doors for the fridge, at the bottom two doors for the freezer and the selectable zone. It has 569 litres net: 372 litres fridge and 197 litres freezer.

In the vacuum compartment, meat, fish and cheese stay fresh for longer. The automatic ice maker works with a water tank, so you do not need a water connection. The fridge is 184 cm high, 90 cm wide and 72 cm deep.

Layout: four doors, four zones

The fridge section is at the top, at eye level. Behind the two French doors you will find tempered glass shelves, LED lighting, door pockets and an egg tray. At the bottom are two separate doors: the selectable zone on the left, the freezer with drawers on the right.

Two fans, one for the fridge and one for the freezer, distribute the cold air separately in each section.

Selectable zone: four settings in one compartment

At the bottom left is the 97-litre selectable zone. You decide what this compartment does:

  • Freezer (-18 to -20 °C): extra freezer space, for example to keep ice cream and ready meals separate
  • Soft freeze (-3 °C): meat and fish lightly frozen, so you can slice and cook them without defrosting
  • Meat (1 °C): meat, dairy and fresh food keep longer
  • Fridge (3 °C): extra fridge space for drinks and food, handy for a party

So the fridge adapts to your week: plenty of freezer space after a big shop, extra fridge space when guests are coming.

Vacuum compartment: meat, fish and cheese stay fresh for longer

The fridge has a 6-litre vacuum compartment. As soon as the drawer and the door are closed, a small pump draws air out of the compartment until it reaches about 0.8 atmospheres. With less oxygen, meat, fish and dairy stay fresh for longer and keep their nutrients. Marinades also soak in faster.

You choose -1 °C for fish and meat or 1 °C for cheese and fruit. After closing, you will hear the pump run for about two minutes; that is normal.

Above the vacuum compartment is the Select Case. You set this drawer for vegetables or for dry food, and below it there is a separate vegetable drawer.

Ice cubes without a water connection

The ice maker takes its water from a tank of about 3 litres in the fridge. You fill the tank with tap water and the fridge makes ice cubes by itself, which drop into a box in the freezer. No fixed water pipe is needed, so you can place the fridge anywhere there is a socket.

Placement and dimensions

The R-WB640VRU0-1 (GBK) is a freestanding fridge freezer. The dimension drawing allows 5 cm of ventilation space all round, but the manual recommends more: at least 10 cm above and behind the fridge and 7 cm on both sides. Stick to these larger gaps so the heat can escape properly. With the doors open, you need about 121.5 cm of depth from the wall according to the dimension drawing, and the doors swing out about 30 cm on both sides.

Climate class ST means the fridge works properly in a room between +16 °C and +38 °C. An unheated garage or shed is therefore less suitable.
