Does a corner fridge exist? Yes - this is it

·

Does a corner fridge exist? Yes: a triangular fridge for the kitchen corner, up to 1195 litres. Sizes, built-in vs stainless, and whether it has a freezer.

Norcool corner fridge with kitchen fronts in the corner of a modern kitchen

The kitchen corner is usually the spot nobody uses. The worktop barely reaches it, cupboards at the back go out of sight, and a normal fridge will not sit there. A corner fridge takes the corner itself instead of building around it. If you have only just met the word - or you searched for a Norcool corner fridge - the first question is whether the appliance is real. Yes. In the UK the same type of cabinet is a known product; in the Benelux XARO has supplied the Norcool model for years.

Does a corner fridge exist?

Yes. A corner fridge is not a novelty sketch. It is a triangular fridge built for a 90-degree kitchen corner instead of a straight wall. Buying stays on the corner fridge collection; this guide is what it is, whether it fits, and what it does not do.

What is a corner fridge exactly?

Norcool corner fridge open: triangular footprint with full shelves, freestanding
Not an American side-by-side: a triangular footprint of about 1 m², up to almost 1200 litres.

A corner fridge is not an American-style fridge and not an extra under-counter cabinet. It fills the inside corner over the full height, on a triangular footprint of about one square metre. That gives roughly 1100 to almost 1200 litres, depending on the version - comparable with four to five under-counter fridges. A corner refrigerator is the same appliance under a longer name.

Why do so few people know the corner fridge?

Thermocold used to make this triangular type and then stopped, so it dropped out of kitchen plans for a while. Norcool still makes it. XARO has been the exclusive Norcool importer for the Benelux since 2016. That does not make XARO the only seller worldwide; it is the address for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

What a corner fridge does in daily use

Inside a Norcool corner fridge: vegetables, packed shelves and a digital thermostat
A week's shopping in one cabinet, in sight. Less need for a second fridge, less food thrown away.

The gain is overview, not status. With the volume of four to five under-counter fridges, a household often does not need a second fridge in the utility room. The weekly shop sits in one cabinet, in sight, instead of split between a main fridge and a spare in the garage. That helps so less food sits at the back until it is out of date.

Will a corner fridge fit your kitchen?

It is designed for a standard 90-degree corner, but "it will fit" is not a measurement. Measure from the inside corner along both back walls, not from the outside of the worktop. The drawing on the product page is the final check, especially in an existing kitchen where walls are rarely square. For a new kitchen, give that drawing to the kitchen studio or architect early. XARO can help with the measure.

Built-in with kitchen fronts or stainless and freestanding?

Two versions. The built-in model with custom kitchen fronts has 1195 litres and sits behind fronts that match the rest of the kitchen. The stainless-steel version has 1161 litres, stays visible, and works freestanding or built-in. On both, the door can be hinged left or right - useful when the corner is only reachable from one side.

Does a corner fridge have a freezer compartment?

No. The Norcool corner fridge at XARO is fridge-only. If you want a freezer in the same triangular cabinet, this model does not offer it. Freeze elsewhere, for example in a drawer freezer. The full height goes to cooling; that is what makes the large volume possible.

Corner fridge or drawer fridge: not the same job

A drawer fridge solves a different problem. It is an under-counter cabinet of about 180 litres, extra cooling near the hob or as a second zone. More in the guide to the 90 cm undercounter drawer fridge. The corner fridge is the main fridge, with many times the volume, built for a corner that would otherwise stay empty. Both can sit in the same kitchen; they do not replace each other.

Frequently asked questions

Does a corner fridge exist?
Yes. A corner fridge is a triangular fridge for the 90-degree kitchen corner, with about 1100 to 1195 litres. Norcool still makes it; XARO imports it for the Benelux. See the corner fridge range.
What is a corner fridge?
A corner fridge has a triangular footprint and fills the inside corner of the kitchen instead of sitting on a straight wall. It replaces the main fridge and holds the volume of several ordinary fridges in one cabinet.
Is a corner refrigerator the same thing?
Yes. Corner fridge is the usual name; corner refrigerator is the same appliance. In kitchens it is the cabinet that sits in the unused corner.
Who still makes corner fridges: Norcool or Thermocold?
Thermocold, a Norwegian brand, stopped this type. Norcool, also Norwegian, still builds the triangular corner fridge. XARO has been the exclusive Norcool importer for the Benelux since 2016.
How many litres does a corner fridge have?
The built-in version with custom kitchen fronts has 1195 litres; the stainless-steel version has 1161 litres. Both sit well above a standard fridge.
Does a corner fridge have a freezer?
No. The Norcool corner fridge at XARO has no freezer compartment. For freezing you need a separate freezer, for example a drawer freezer elsewhere in the kitchen.
Can a corner fridge be built in with my kitchen fronts?
Yes. The built-in version sits behind your own kitchen fronts so the cabinet disappears into the run. There is also a stainless-steel version that stays visible, freestanding or built-in.
Will a corner fridge fit a standard kitchen corner?
Usually yes, if you measure from the inside corner along both back walls. Use the drawing on the product page for the niche. Unsure? Contact XARO.
